Romna shifted again. "I have only learned how to write them through trial and error. So, no, I know nothing of their meanings, sounds, or names." She watched as he read, curiosity seeping from every scale.

A few moments passed before she lost her resignation and got up to see what he was looking at. Though she had lived with the books for years they were enigmas. Things just outside her reaching, and it both annoyed and interested her that he could pick one up and understand it immediately.

Her pearly muzzle leaned in beside his shoulder, scanning the pages as he did, though she didn't see anything different. Though agreeably the picture shown was rather vile. "Yes, yes they are," she said, her voice full of utter revulsion. Her forked tongue reached out to taste the air near the book. -Such mysteries, and frustration. I must learn their secrets-

Admarco watched her make a face at the picture and opened his large jaws to emit a deep chuckle. "It is called the black plague, or bubonic plague. It is a painful virus to humans."

He reached out and wrote the alphabet in the dirt on the floor. "The first letter is 'A'. It has a long and short sound. Long being 'ay' and the short being 'ah'."
He looked up at her, brushing her nose. "You understand?"

((So short. Ack, I'm sorry.))

Romna watched carefully as he drew the letter in the dirt. -So that's the first one. And two sounds...I wonder what makes this letter important enough to have two sounds- The tip of her tail whisked back and forth as she thought.

Admarco's head turned as he looked over at her, brushing the tip of her muzzle gently. The movement and the touch startled her, but she did not jerk away. Instead a soft rose spread from the tips of her wings and across her face. Her eyes met his for a moment, but she quickly turned her head and intensified her interest in the human letter in the dirt.

"What makes it important enough to have two sounds? Do they all have two?" The membrane of her wings shifted, as she shuffled her wings, making the soft rasping sound of skin on scales.

Admarco smiled at the color that graced her cheeks and laughed gently, turning back to the letter. "Not all of the letters have two sounds."
He wrote the letters again, this time divided into two groups. "The alphabet consists of consonant letters, letters with only one sound, and vowels, letters that have two sounds." He pointed to the vowels. "These are the letters that have two sounds. 'A', 'E', 'I', 'O', and 'U'. Also, do you know both forms of each letter? The capital and the small letter?"

He shifted his wings and stretched his back legs. He was enjoying this. It had been awhile since he had had anyone interested in what he had to say.

Romna watched again. -Two groups...hm...the consonants don't seem that hard. One sound...- Her brow furrowed at the thought of the vowels. "How do you know which one to say, for the vowels?" A moment later her face darkened and her head cocked to the side. "It's going to rain, and hard. And I know the letters, as to which is what I'm not sure what goes where. Give me a moment..."

She pulled herself up onto her feet and took the few strides to the other side of the room. There she rose up on her hind legs, spread her wings for balance, and reached up into what would have been the towering dome of the temple. Her one front claw grasped what looked like a large copper pipe that ran out through the wall onto the roof while the other pulled a slat that opened the valve on the end of the pipe.

As soon as the valve was open a torrent of water fell from the end of the pipe landing in a basin that was easily large enough to have been a grain bin for the whole town. After a moment she closed the valve and fell back onto all fours again. "There's a collection trough up there. If it gets too full it will be too heavy for the roof, and the extra water is always good for a hot bath." Her forked tongue flicked between her lips at the pleasurable thought.
